The High Life

Album: Thanks For Listening (2014)
Play Video

Songfacts®:

  • The title is play on Miller High Life - "The Champagne of Beers." The beer was marketed with the concept of affordable luxury - the idea that the best things in life could also be the least expensive.

This concept is also Colt Ford's credo, as he often raps about enjoying the simple pleasures in life, especially time with friends and family. In this song, the "high life" is a small-town Friday night with football and a get-together, complete with pick-up trucks, music, and of course, beer.
  • When Ford was growing up in Athens, Georgia, finding the hangout on a Friday night took some effort - you might have to drive to a few spots before you found it. These days, it's a lot easier, since you can just check Facebook, which is what happens on this track.

In our interview with Ford, he said: "Sure. That's the reality of today: you post it on there and everybody's like, 'Okay, this is where it's happening.' And that's from the city to the small town."
  • Chase Rice sings the hook on this song. The "Ready Set Roll" singer also wrote the song along with Ford, Jesse Rice (no relation), Zach Crowell and Chris Cline.
  • The video, directed by Scott Hansen, finds Colt Ford and Chase Rice at a rooftop party in Nashville. It was shot at Aerial, a downtown event space that is a popular spot for wedding receptions.
