Songfacts®:

  • This piano-driven, Prince-influenced tune was first performed by D'Angelo during his live concerts back in 2012. The studio version features veteran session legend James Gadson, who is one of the most-recorded drummers in the history of R&B music, and Welsh bassist Pino Palladino - he was Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey's first choice to fill the position left by John Entwistle as the bassist for The Who.
  • D'Angelo co-wrote the track with Q-Tip. D'Angelo supplied guest vocals on the hip hop artist's 2008 cut "Believe," one of several collaborations the R&B crooner did during the long 14-year gap between Black Messiah and its predecessor, Voodoo.
  • A 'sugar daddy' is a rich man who lavishes expensive gifts on his much younger female partner. The expression is of American origin and is derived from the slang sugar "money" and colloquial daddy "father."
