Daniel Caesar was born Ashton Simmonds in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada, the son of Hollace and Norwill Simmonds. He is of Bajan and Jamaican descent.
Simmonds chose his stage name as a blend of two powerful names: "Daniel," from the biblical figure known for his faith and integrity, and "Caesar," referencing the Roman leader Julius Caesar.
Growing up singing in his father's Seventh-day Adventist church, Caesar was shaped by the mix of strict religion and soulful music, a tension that still surfaces in songs like "Frontal Lobe Muzik" and "Blessed," which circle themes of spirituality, guilt, and redemption.
After a family falling out in his late teens, Caesar was left couch-surfing and sleeping in Toronto parks as he chased his musical ambitions. This harsh period of survival instilled an empathy in Caesar that informed his songwriting.

His 2025 album Son of Spergy takes its name from his father's nickname. In an interview with Billboard, he explained that, as a child, a father feels "a lot like God," the source of blessings, love, and fear in equal measure.
Daniel Caesar has an unconventional personal style, consistently blending vintage thrift pieces with high-fashion elements in his public appearances. He has made headlines for his bold choices, particularly at major events like the Met Gala, where he once showed up in a tailored Gucci suit paired with a satin durag.
Caesar is a cinephile, and his favorite movie is Pulp Fiction. "It's the fact that it's literally a movie that's interesting the whole way through, and it's about nothing," he told Vice. "It's all in the dialogue."
