Songfacts®:

  • Grace Tandon is an American singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She is of Indian, German, and Irish descent, and her stage moniker 'Daya' (pronounced Day-uh), is the Hindi translation of her name, Grace.
  • Daya started playing piano at the age of 3 and when she was 11 she enrolled as a student at the Accelerando Music Conservatory, Pittsburgh. During a visit to the school, songwriter and producer Gino Barletta [JoJo, Miranda Cosgrove, Jessica Mauboy] heard her sing and instantly took an interest in the young songstress.

In February 2015, Barletta formally invited Daya to work with him at Paramount Recording Studios in Los Angeles. It was during one of these writing sessions that this atmospheric pop-dance song was written and recorded. It was released as her debut single on April 22, 2015.
  • The song poses the question, "Where do the good boys go to hide away?"

"To me, 'Hide Away' is about waiting for that someone who will love and appreciate you for exactly who you are," Daya said. "As a 16-year-old, I'm still figuring out who I am and what it is that I want. I'm not in any rush to settle."
  • This is not to be confused with Kiesza's 2014 single "Hideaway."
  • When this debuted at #97 Hot 100, it not only signalled Daya' s arrival on the chart but it was also the first ever entry for her independent label Artbeatz.
  • The song had a second lease of life in 2024 thanks to a viral three-person dance trend on TikTok where each of the first three lines of the chorus gets its own set of moves from one of the three dancers.
