Songfacts®:

  • Deftones frontman Chino Moreno described the "Ceremony" lyric as "pretty dark," and for good reason. He sings about turning to skin and bones, and joining the parade of the ghosts. The title never appears in the lyric; the refrain is "It's an illusion."

Speaking with BBC Radio 1's Rock Show With Daniel P. Carter, Moreno described the lyric as a hard one to talk about, adding, "I kind of tether with the true meaning of that song, 'cause it's really, really, really bad. It's not good."
  • One of the first songs Deftones wrote for their Ohms album, "Ceremony" was born out of a jam. Moreno says everyone picked up their instruments, reacted to each other, and the track built from there.
  • Deftones tapped Leigh Whannell, writer of the early Saw movies and director of Insidious: Chapter 3 and The Invisible Man, to film the song's music video. The clip stars Australian actress Cleopatra Coleman, co-star of The Last Man On Earth Fox comedy TV series. We see her trick her way into a cocktail party at a private club before finding herself in more dark, depraved surroundings.
