Songfacts®:

  • Dolly explained the song's meaning. "It's based on the fact a lot of my relatives couldn't read and write and I saw how crippling that was, but also the struggles I've gone through as an artist and in my life," she said. "It's about saying you've just gotta get out there and try. It's an uplifting encouraging song. You're not going to amount to anything unless you try."
  • The song was released as a single in the UK, following the huge response to Dolly's appearance on Day 3 of the 2014 Glastonbury festival.
  • This serves as the theme song for Dolly's literacy program The Imagination Library, which has seen her give away over 60 million books across the globe. "We give children books once a month from the year they are born till they get to kindergarten so they can learn to love to read," the singer explained.
