Songfacts®:

  • Dustin Lynch wrote this song with Ashley Gorley (Luke Bryan's "That's My Kind of Night") and Zach Crowell (Keith Urban's "Cop Car.") The cut tells Lynch's story of an encounter with a woman. one night in Dallas. "We were on the dance floor two-stepping," he recalled to Rolling Stone Country, "and this girl, I don't know who she was, kept flirting with me and taking my hat. I could not figure out what her intentions were. It reminded me of being in the friend zone, and I've been there before - not knowing what someone's intentions are."
  • The song explores a complicated relationship that Lynch says closely mirrors his own life. "It's about being stuck in the friend zone and wondering if you should take a friendship into no man's land where there's no return," he explained with a smile. "Once you kiss a friend, you're not a friend anymore. All of a sudden you are something bigger and hopefully better, but sometimes it ends up crashing and burning pretty hard. So there's that fear factor."
