Songfacts®:

  • This is the lead single from Deconstruction, an album that focuses on compassion and kindness. Asked by Billboard if he felt a responsibility to put out an album like The Deconstruction because of the state of the world, Eels mainman Mark Oliver Everett replied:

"Totally. I feel like the only small way someone like me can contribute as an artist is in that way. Take the song, 'Today Is the Day.' Maybe there's somebody who's become aware that there's some change they need to make in their life, but they haven't quite made it yet. And maybe they just happen to hear this song at the right time and it helps push them along a little bit faster towards making the change."
  • The video was directed by Gus Black and stars Mike Mitchell of Netflix original series Love, a show that Everett has also acted in. According to the press release, Mitchell goes on "a journey of intense purpose." Speaking of the clip, Everett said:

"But where is he going? What's driving his extreme focus and joyous resolve to seize the day? Find out in this video accompaniment to one of Eels' most uplifting songs to date."
  • Everett is not a fan of Donald Trump. "We recorded the song 'Today Is The Day' around the time Trump became president and I was like, 'Today is NOT the day!'," he told The Sun. "But then you must still TRY to make today the day."
