Songfacts®:

  • Much of First Aid Kit's Ruins album deals with the aftermath of Klara Söderberg's doomed engagement to her English boyfriend, singer-songwriter Jo Rose. The title track is one of some of several songs that reveal her pain. However, the lyrics also offer hope amid the wreckage of a failed romance. Klara told HMV.com:

"It's the ruins of a relationship. How sad it is, but also how beautiful it was. That's all you have left at the end."
  • First Aid Kit explained to Consequence of Sound why they named the album after this song:

"'Ruins' felt like a good title for this record. We're walking around inside the ruins of a relationship. We're seeing the good as well as the bad and trying to make sense of it all. It's sad, but there's still hope and rejoice in the beautiful memories."
