Songfacts®:

  • Here, Flume teams up with Sydney-based singer-songwriter MAY-A. Over Flume's jerky synths and strident beat, MAY-A sings about post-relationship clarity.

As far as summer goes, I'm not even close
To wearing you like clothes when nobody's home
Now I don't see your ghost everywhere I go
And as far as I know, you need me the most

Having ended a bad relationship, MAY-A takes comfort in the certainty she did the right thing.
  • Flume first wrote the song in Los Angeles in the summer of 2020 during the early months of the pandemic. "I was really excited about the initial idea," he told Apple Music, "but it was only once I got back to Australia in early 2021 and linked up in the studio with May-A that the song really came to life."
  • Flume wrote "Say Nothing" with fellow Aussie Sarah Aarons (Zedd's "Stay," Maren Morris' "Girl").
  • Flume released the song on February 2, 2022 as the lead single from Palaces. The album title came from the warm feeling the Australian producer had when he returned home in early 2021; it was as if he was back in his palace. "Felt like I had a lot of clarity, felt much more grounded, living a really simple life," he told Triple J. "That's when all the music came together."
  • This came top of the Triple J Hottest 100 2016 countdown of the most popular songs of the year, as chosen by the listeners of Australian radio station Triple J. Over 2.4 million votes were submitted.

Flume became the second artist to win the Hottest 100 twice, having previously reached #1 in 2017 with "Never Be Like You." (Australian rock band Powderfinger previously did the double with 1999's "These Days" and 2000's "My Happiness").
