Songfacts®:

  • The Indigo Girls write separately, and Amy Ray composed this one. In our interview with Ray, she explained: "I just wrote that about evolution and growth in a person. Just, break free. It was also to dissolve myself stylistically into another realm of music that I really like: rock and punk, Patti Smith, and all these artists that are not in the Indigo Girls world. I wanted to experiment with that stuff. That was one of the first songs that was written that way."
  • The Native American trio Ulali sang on this track. Amy Ray says they had a big influence on the direction of the song.
  • Tom Morello did a popular remix of this song that was released on a maxi-single in 1998 along with the studio cut and a live version of the song recorded at a Lilith Fair show in Shakopee, Minnesota in 1997. The Morello remix made #36 on the Dance chart.
