"All the time at my shows after the show I go outside and meet the fans and I just… they pull me aside all the time crying telling me that my music has helped them and how they feel like they don't matter," he explained to MTV News. "I don't want anyone to feel like that and if I have a platform that I can reach to so many people I want to tell them that they shouldn't feel like that because there are other people. So I think it's important to put out a song with that kind of message."
