Songfacts®:

  • Written by Big & Rich's Big Kenny and John Rich, along with Vicky McGehee, this ode to country life was Jason Aldean's debut single and has become his signature song.
  • This was also Aldean's first trip to the top tier of the country charts, where the single landed at #10.
  • The music video was filmed in Palmdale, Florida, at the C&R Mudhole and shows Aldean and his band performing while fans party in the mud. While the song proved to be Aldean's big break, its video did the same for director Wes Edwards, who learned a lesson about best laid plans on his first big shoot. He explained in a Songfacts interview: "I remember when I showed up to shoot 'Hicktown,' I had a storyboard and within like the first 10 minutes, I just threw it away, like 'I'm never getting any of this, but what's here is so insane that let's just run around and shoot as much of it as we possibly can.'"

Edwards and Aldean would reunite for several more clips, including "Amarillo Sky," "Tattoos On This Town," and "Fly Over States."
