Songfacts®:

  • According to The Billboard Book of #1 Country Hits, John Conlee is the only licensed mortician ever to have a #1 Country record, which does rather make one wary of a song called "Lady Lay Down," but fortunately this is a run of the mill, easy listening number which saw the beginning of a collaboration between Rafe VanHoy and Don Cook, the former of whom said: "The first night we ever got together to write, we wrote about four songs, which was real unusual for me", or for anyone, surely!? "Lady Lay Down" was produced by Bud Logan, and topped the chart in January 1979. >>

  • Brad from Barry, TxI've never heard a bad John Conlee song, and "Lady Lay Down" is no exception. Although, "Rose Colored Glasses" is probably my favorite Conlee track, each one was great. A great voice and some really wonderful songs.
