Songfacts®:

  • This promo single is from John Legend's Love in the Future album. The track was produced by long-term collaborator Dave Tozer and Hit-Boy, whose credits collectively include Jay-Z, Rihanna and Mary J Blige. It was written by Roc Nation singer-songwriter James Fauntleroy, who has penned songs for and with the likes of Drake, Big Sean and Justin Timberlake.
  • Tozer told SonicScoop about the production of spacy, minimal track: "It's very minimal with some haunting sounds," he said. "I'm using the sounds of the Mellotron a lot, giving the track depth and heavy mood."
  • The track samples "Winter Song" by Sarah Bareilles and Ingrid Michelson. Hit Boy brought in the basic sample and basic drum pattern for the song.
  • Like many of the other Love in The Future tracks, this song concerns Legend's relationship with his partner, the model Chrissy Teigen. The lyrics were inspired by his expectancy of a happy future with his new girl after their first night spent together.
  • When Legend showcased Love In The Future in front of an intimate crowd in New York City, he revealed that Chrissy was left blushing after playing this song to her parents. "She got a little embarrassed. The second line is 'We couldn't wait, we did it in the living room,'" he laughed.
