Songfacts®:

  • Kacey Musgraves wrote this song the week after that she met singer-songwriter Ruston Kelly. The pair got engaged on Christmas Eve in 2016, after he proposed to her at Musgraves' childhood home in Golden, Texas.

    I was just coastin'
    Never really goin' anywhere
    Caught up in a web
I was gettin' kinda used to stayin' there
    And out of the blue
    I fell for you

"It's actually the first song I wrote after meeting my now-husband," said Musgraves. "Everything from the lyrics down to the production really represents this floaty, dreamy feeling that I got as soon as he came into my life. I wrote this song with Natalie Hemby and Shane McAnally back in 2016 in the Spring when I had gotten off the road and tried to get back to my creative roots of just writing again just to write and explore new ideas. I had just met Ruston, so my world had been completely flipped upside down, so this is a great sonic representation of that."
  • Musgraves performed the song for the first time on the January 21, 2017 episode of A Prairie Home Companion radio show.
  • The song's music video was shot in Mexico City by "Space Cowboy" director Courtney Phillips.
  • This won Best Country Solo Performance at the Grammy Awards in 2019. Golden Hour also earned Musgraves the awards for Best Country Album and Album Of The Year.
