Songfacts®:

  • "There Is A Light" is the penultimate track of Star-Crossed, an album inspired by the breakdown of Kacey Musgraves' marriage to fellow country singer Ruston Kelly. Presented as a tragedy in three acts, she documents the blissed-out stage of their romantic relationship, her heartache when that same relationship dissolved and the healing from their fallout. This song finds Musgraves celebrating having come out the other side with the light of hope still inside her.
  • Musgraves co-wrote and co-produced the song with American musicians Ian Fitchuk and Daniel Tashian. They collaborated with her throughout Star-Crossed, as well as her previous studio album, Golden Hour.
  • Veteran Nashville session player Jim Hoke plays the song's cathartic flute solo. "It just hits you over the head with happiness," Musgraves told Uncut magazine with a laugh. "People just laugh out loud out of happiness whenever I play it for them. It feels like a little treat at the end of the record. There aren't a lot of clean-cut, black-and-white feelings in any tragedy. There's always a lot of grey area to explore, a lot of contradictions."
