Songfacts®:

  • Bush wrote this song for her dance teacher Lindsay Kemp. It's about how a person discovers free expression. "He needed a song written to him," she told Sounds magazine in 1980. "He opened up my eyes to the meanings of movement. He makes you feel so good. If you've got two left feet it's 'you dance like an angel darling.' He fills people up, you're an empty glass and glug, glug, glug, he's filled you with champagne."
  • The inspiration for this song came also from whales. Kate thought that they were graceful and sang beautifully. Whale song is heard at the opening of the track, sampled from the 1970 nature album Songs of the Humpback Whale by Dr. Roger S. Payne.
  • While "Wuthering Heights" was the first single from Bush's debut album in the UK and most of the world, this song was the first released in Japan and reached #1 in that country. Oddly enough, it did not chart anywhere else. >>>

  • This was the opening song on Bush's first tour, which ended up being her only tour. The trek ran for 24 dates across Europe in 1979. Instead of getting caught up in the dreaded touring cycle, Bush decided to do what The Beatles did in 1966 and focus on studio work. She did perform a series of concerts in 2014, but it was a residency, with every show at the Eventim Apollo in London.

  • Jeffrey from Rosemead, CaYes Mr Overveen, I agree. I had Nirvana's debut as the best until I finally heard this one for the first time in 2011. It moved me...
  • Sandra from Durham, United KingdomI took this album from my sister when I was 8 years old. I'm now 40 and I still listen to it and love it.
  • Erick Overveen from Amsterdam, NetherlandsI think this is what heaven must look & sound like. The opening track from by far the greatest 'DEBUT' album in the history of popular music. Anyone agree ?

  • Ivan from Dallas, TxIt's a great song. I first heard it in 1978 in HongKong. I especially like her piano playing and the drumming. I bought the album (vinyl) "The Kick Inside" too, and it's fantastic.
