Songfacts®:

  • Keane's fifth studio album, Cause and Effect, is a breakup record based on principal songwriter Tim Rice-Oxley's marriage split. This song is a collection of philosophical musings that reflect on his feelings of depression as a result of life taking a left turn.

It's the voices in your head now
Saying there's something wrong about the way I feel
A broken link, a missing part, a punctured wheel

Rice-Oxley just wants to understand why he feels the way he does.
  • Rice-Oxley explained to Apple that the song "is very sympathetic" and trying to say that you are not alone; everybody has bad things going on in their loves. He added: "The way you feel is the way you feel. That's totally valid. I think it's really important for people to hear that and try and understand that about ourselves and about each other."
  • The song came from a very long writing process. Rice-Oxley started off with the title and a melody, but it took him months before he felt he was expressing the emotion accurately.
  • Rice Oxley told Billboard the Cause and Effect album title came from his "marital breakup and various romantic disasters." He added: "When you're 40 years old, a breakup is a big change in direction in your life."
