Songfacts®:

  • Larray (real name: Lawrence Merritt) is a Californian social media personality who makes funny videos for a young teenage audience. He's also a member of the TikTok collective "Hype House," with the D'Amelio sisters and Addison Rae, among others. Merritt's performing name arises from his fan page for Miley Ray Cyrus; "Larray" is a combination of Larri and Ray. He released "Canceled" on October 18, 2020, and it quickly went viral on YouTube, becoming his first Hot 100 hit.
  • The song is a send-up of cancel culture, where someone loses support of media and fans due to something they say or post. Larray does this by playfully dissing many of his fellow TikTok and YouTube stars, including Bryce Hall, Addison Rae, Charlie and Dixie D'Amelio, Tony Lopez and Tana Mongeau.
  • During the interlude and chorus, Larray interpolates the hook of his 2018 song "First Place," which is a parody of Tay-K's viral 2017 hit "The Race."
  • Larray wrote the song himself. It was helmed by "The Race" producer S.Diesel and Internet Money, the collective and record label founded by Taz Taylor and Nick Mira. Best known for their own hit "Lemonade," they also helped break Juice WRLD, Lil Tecca and Trevor Daniel at early stages of their careers.
