Songfacts®:

  • The fifth single from Kravitz's ninth studio album finds the singer determined to free himself from his past and push through to embrace the present. The song was inspired by the novel-turned-movie Precious (2009), a heart-rending story about an illiterate African American teen who rises above horrific abuse to create a better life for her children. Kravitz played Nurse John in the film and dreamed the song idea while he was napping in his trailer.
  • Precious is based on the 1996 novel Push by Sapphire. The movie originally used that title until the filmmakers were forced to change it to avoid confusion with another film of the same name.
  • Although this closes out Black and White America, it was the first track Kravitz cut for the album.
