Songfacts®:

  • This song finds Liam Gallagher targeting someone he accuses of being "a snake," "a weasel" and "a tadpole in the sea." It is likely the track is directed at his brother Noel, his former Oasis bandmate and archenemy.
  • You sold me right up the river
You had to hold me back
You could've looked for the sunshine, yeah
But you had to paint the whole thing black
Now I'm back in the city
The lights are up on me

It was Noel Gallagher who broke up Oasis after Liam smashed up one off his guitars during an altercation. Since then Noel has refused to consider any Oasis reunion, painting "the whole thing black." Now Liam is about to release his second solo album and the spotlight will be back on him.
  • Gallagher wrote "Shockwave" with two of the key collaborators behind his debut album As You Were:

Greg Kurstin, who also produced the track. Kurstin won the 2018 Grammy Award for Producer of the Year, Non-Classical, in part for his work on As You Were.

Andrew Wyatt, who co-wrote three songs on As You Were, including its lead single "Wall of Glass."
  • Gallagher gave the song its live debut during an intimate London gig at Hackney's Round Chapel on June 5, 2019.
  • The video features Gallagher on a trip through America's Deep South. It was directed by filmmaker François Rousselet, who previously shot the clip for "Wall of Glass."
