Songfacts®:

  • Louis Tomlinson's mum, Johannah Deakin, passed away at the age of 43 on December 7, 2016, following a battle with leukemia. This song finds the former One Direction star detailing his grief after his mother's death.

You'll never know how much I miss you
The day that they took you
I wish it was me instead

"I just feel like musically, I almost needed to get this song off my chest," Tomlinson said of the track. "People say writing is a part of therapy and in a way, I feel like I'd been avoiding writing this song because I knew I only had one chance to get it right."
  • The song was released on March 7, 2019 as Tomlinson's first single under his new deal with Arista in the US. He signed to Simon Cowell's label Syco in the UK in 2017.
  • Tomlinson's 2016 collaboration with Steve Aoki, "Just Hold On ," was written about his mum's courageous battle with the disease.
  • Tomlinson shot the song's music video at the Hunslet Club in Leeds, England.
