Songfacts®:

  • "Sometimes" was the first single for Luke Bell, who grew up in Wyoming before making his way to Nashville with stops in New Orleans and Austin. With a honky-tonk piano, the song is a throwback to the sound of Jimmie Rodgers and other artists from that era. The lyrics are also in the cry-in-your-beer variety, as Bell sings about how he can't get over his "cornbread queen." Even though they had some rough times, he still misses her.
  • In a Songfacts interview with Luke Bell, he said, "I enjoy the way that song feels. The way it makes other people feel. It's fun. Sometimes you have songs that prove themselves over time and you continue to really enjoy."
  • The music video is in the style of an '80s VHS recording, showing Bell and other patrons performing the song in a Karaoke bar. It was directed by Joshua Shoemaker, whose credits include "You Ain't Alone" by Alabama Shakes and "St. Roch Blues" by Hurray For The Riff Raff.
  • The self-titled Luke Bell, which includes "Sometimes," ended up being his last album. He struggled with bipolar disorder and stopped performing around 2018. In 2022, he was found dead in Tucson, Arizona.
