Songfacts®:

  • The title "DJ's Chord Organ" refers to lo-fi pioneer Daniel Johnston's chord organ, which Mac Miller acquired in November 2013. This quirky instrument became the heart of the track, which Mac produced under his alter ego, Larry Fisherman. The lucid, dreamlike beat was built around the organ's meditative tones, creating an otherworldly soundscape.

At the time, Mac was fresh off his role as executive producer for the Daniel Johnston biographical film Hi, How Are You Daniel Johnston?
  • A pre-fame SZA contributes an intoxicating verse where she sings of a distant lover. She sings about her man grinding through endless days, barely taking a nap, fueled, it seems, by cocaine.

SZA, newly signed to Top Dawg Entertainment and freshly arrived in Los Angeles, recalls Mac as one of her first connections in the city. "I'd come over every day and record," she said, reflecting on their sessions.

Mac's alter ego, Larry Fisherman, also contributed to the production on SZA's 2014 project, Z.
  • "DJ's Chord Organ" was recorded during a week of jam sessions for Balloonerism, a full-length album Miller created around the time of his mixtape Faces. The album, a kaleidoscope of raw and experimental tracks, lived in limbo for years as Mac focused on GO:OD AM and other projects. Following his untimely passing in 2018, Miller's estate carefully navigated his trove of unreleased work. Finally, on January 17, 2025, exactly five years after the release of Circles, his first posthumous album, Balloonerism, saw the light of day, released under license to Warner Records.
  • Reflecting on "DJ's Chord Organ," SZA revealed, "This track was left exactly how it was recorded all those years ago. No editing, no tune, no nothing. It didn't seem right to change it. I can still feel the raw hangout it was born from."

SZA also lent her voice to another Balloonerism track, "Friendly Hallucinations," recorded during those same fruitful sessions.
  • The bond between Mac and SZA extended far beyond music. When he passed, SZA shared a heartfelt tribute: "Forever a genuine friend. The most kind, supportive person ever around."

She later joined an all-star lineup - including Chance the Rapper and Travis Scott - at the Mac Miller: A Celebration of Life tribute concert, honoring the rapper's life and legacy.
