Songfacts®:

  • A track from Macy Gray's second album The Id, "Oblivion" was partially recorded in the basement of the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago, incorporating a pipe organ that the venue's house organist, Brian Durack, spent years putting together and maintaining. Gray asked Durack to demonstrate the organ and recorded what he played on a portable DAT player.

Inspired by Durack's organ space, Gray wrote the lyrics that night. The song is about retreating into your own world any time you'd like to get away from the real one.
