Songfacts®:

  • After three decades of relationships gone wrong, drama and tears, Mary J. Blige is tired of feeling empty. Her solution is to look into the mirror each morning and speak positive affirmations to herself.

I wake up every morning and tell myself
    "Good morning gorgeous"
Some times you gotta look in the mirror and say
    "Good morning gorgeous"

Blige told Audacy's Big Tigger that speaking mantras such as "good morning gorgeous" as soon as she wakes up has transformed her self-esteem. Being gentle on herself means she no longer has self-hatred or wants to be someone else.
  • This is the centerpiece and title track of Mary J. Blige's 14th album. The singer released the self-affirming anthem as its first single along with "Amazing" on December 5, 2021.
  • Blige wrote the emotional display of self-love with singer-songwriter H.E.R., D'Mile, Lucky Daye, and Tiara Thomas. H.E.R. also produced the vintage soul track with D'Mile and contributed guitar and background vocals.
  • R&B producer D' Mile collaborated with H.E.R. on her Grammy Song of the Year "I Can't Breathe" and Oscar-winning tune, "Fight For You."
  • Blige performed this song at the Grammy Awards in 2023. It was nominated for Record Of The Year but lost to "About Damn Time" by Lizzo.
  • The song peaked at #83 in the US, Blige's highest solo placing since 2009's "I Am" reached #55. It was her first single to be certified Gold since her 2006 collaboration with U2, "One."
