Songfacts®:

  • Matthew West set out to pen a song in the fashion of an old gospel hymn that reminds people of the mercy of God.

Singing ohhhhh, there is a life for every soul
No matter where you've been just come on home
Let all God's children sing along
    Hallelujah chains are gone
    Mercy is a song

West explained that there is no need to let our lives be guided by fear because God has set us free through his son Jesus on the cross. "This is how great, how deep, how wide his love and mercy is for you," he said.

The singer added his favorite part of the song is the bridge where he reminds us that "this messed-up world where we live right now" is only temporary home.

Heaven is a mansion, a promise in the sky
One day we'll be singing with the angels up on high
The old familiar melody like we've known it all along
Heaven is a mansion, mercy is a song.
God has given us the ultimate promise of heaven
