• "The Unnamed Feeling" is the ninth track on St. Anger, Metallica's eight studio album. The song is about the feeling a person has just before he or she loses it. Metallica frontman James Hetfield has said it's specifically about anxiety, but the lyrics are loose enough that the song can be applied to any emotional reaction. Many fans relate it to their own lives that way.
• This was released as the third of four singles from St. Anger on January 12, 2004, reaching #28 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Songs chart.
  
  Metallica started recording the album in a converted Army barracks on the Presidio of San Francisco, which is a park found at the northernmost point of the San Francisco Peninsula. Later, they transitioned to San Rafael, California, where they'd opened a new studio named "HQ."
  
  The documentary Metallica: Some Kind of Monster covers the recording of the album, including the therapy sessions the band needed to get through it.
• The cover of the single features the same Gollum-like creature as the one on cover of "Some Kind of Monster."
• Nickelback was criticized for using a riff very similar to the intro of this song for their song "Throw Yourself Away" which was released just a few months later. >>>
