Songfacts®:

  • Nils Lofgren wrote this song for the soundtrack of the 1994 movie Every Breath, starring Judd Nelson. Bonnie Bramlett was slated to sing it, but they never recorded the song (Lofgren did do the soundtrack album, which got much better reviews than the film). After the song was scrapped from the soundtrack, Lofgren started performing it live and eventually released it on his 2015 solo album UK2015 Face The Music Tour. The song is about a guy looking back on his long, hard life.
  • In our 2015 interview with Lofgren, he talked about recording the song. "I got a lever harp as a Christmas gift a few years ago, so I worked up the first verse on this harp, and it's kind of a dramatic opening - it goes from a gentle harp-blues verse into an electric keyboard finish. It shows the 'all over the place shows' I do with gentle stuff, and then some more aggressive rock, which is just natural for me."
