Songfacts®:

  • Isotype is a visual language which was developed by Otto Neurath and his wife Marie at the Social and economic museum of Vienna in Austria between 1925 and 1934. It is a symbolic method of showing historical, social and technological connections in pictograms.

The term Isotype (which stands for "International System of TYpographic Picture Education") was applied to the method around 1935, after the Neuraths were forced to leave Vienna by the rise of Austrian fascism. The success of the Austrian couple's method of representing quantitative information through easily interpretable icons, sparked the golden age of infographics in print.
  • This six minute slice of synthy vocoder pop is the lead single from OMD's 13th studio album The Punishment Of Luxury. Singer Andy McCluskey said the track is "about the modern world where our communication value systems are so reduced that you wonder if we're actually getting any clear point across."
