Songfacts®:

  • This song is about Ozzy's fans. They are what "gets him through."
  • The song was an attempt to clean up Ozzy's image. He claims in the lyrics that he is "not the antichrist," something he was accused of by many people over the years.
  • The video was released shortly before the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on America. Because it contains images of fire and blood, MTV sent it back and refused to air it until it was edited to be more sensitive. Ozzy's team cut a new version which the network aired.
  • The tour to support this song and the Down To Earth album opened on Halloween 2001. It was going to be the "Black Christmas" tour, but after the terrorist attacks, it was changed to the "Merry Mayhem" tour. Ozzy was in New York City on 9/11 when terrorists flew planes into the World Trade Center. He was there, along with his wife Sharon, so their daughter could attend a Michael Jackson concert at Madison Square Garden the night before.
  • The video was directed by Jonas Ackerland, who has also worked with U2 and Madonna.
  • "Gets Me Through" was the first single from the Down To Earth album. Zakk Wylde, who played on many of Ozzy's projects, played guitar on the album.
  • Zakk Wylde made an impression with his guitar work on this track, especially his wah pedal-infused solo, which landed at #11 on Guitar World's 2015 list of greatest wah solos of all time. Wylde even has his own signature wah-wah pedal through the manufacturer Jim Dunlop.

  • AnonymousThe Riff sounds like Jerry Cantrell to me
  • David from Harlow, Uk It's a shame the video has been censored and the TV news bit removed when the presenter says: "When asked for a comment, Satan said: No, he's not my boy, but I love him like a son." At that point the TV explodes, a scene which hasn't been removed. Does anybody know where to find this uncut version?
  • Robert from Atlanta, GaThe best part of the video is where there is a room full of doves, then a headless, blood-covered one hits the wall and blood spills out. ThAT WAS AWESOME! the part I didin't like was the room with broken glass an Ozzy looking dead and then he grins, what is that about?
  • Jeri from Edmonton, CanadaThis song is awesome on the Live at Budokan dvd... but everything by Ozzy is beastly good anyways! We love you Ozzy
  • Billy from Otway, OhWhen i'm feeling down,Ozzy gets me through.
  • Ravyn from Hell, NyGreat song showing appreciation to us, when its really HIM that keeps US together. Atleast me in my troubled times.
  • James from Sarasota, FlI just heard this song for the first time but they talk like it's been out since 2001; good song anyways.
