Songfacts®:

  • This song is about Post Malone's struggles with alcohol. The lyrics are introspective and raw, showing Malone's remorse for his drinking. He begs his love interest to take him home and help him. He is messed up and acknowledges that "enough is enough."
  • Malone wrote "Enough Is Enough" from a place of after-the-fact self-reflection. "Writing that song was not about current experiences; it's not like I can't go to Vegas," he told Apple Music. "It's super cathartic to be able to tell your story and then reach out to people who maybe have gone or are going through it, [to] at least bring joy through music."
  • Malone recorded "Enough Is Enough" for his fifth album, Austin. He made the record after moving to Salt Lake City; it's his first project since the May 2022 birth of his daughter. "Having a baby really put a lot into perspective, and it's really slowed me down a lot party-wise, going out and being crazy," he told Apple Music. "But it's the most beautiful thing."
  • The song is built over a guitar melody that Malone played himself and an electric piano melody. Malone originally wanted Austin to be a stripped-back guitar album, but it ended up being a mix of different genres, including pop, rock, and hip-hop.

Mercury Records president Tyler Arnold said Malone texted him right after his fourth album, Twelve Carat Toothache, was released and said, "Hey! Have a studio free tomorrow. I want to start making an acoustic album." Arnold was surprised by the request, as Malone is known for his more electronic and hip-hop-inspired music. However, he agreed to set up a studio for Malone and as he worked on the album, Malone's vision for it changed. He began adding more layers to the music and experimenting with different sounds. The album ended up being far from an acoustic album.
  • Post Malone produced "Enough Is Enough" with Louis Bell, Max Martin, and Rami Yacoub. The four wrote it alongside Billy Walsh. Bell and Walsh are Malone's go-to collaborators. Martin and Yacoub also co-produced one other Austin track, "Sign Me Up."
