Songfacts®:

  • After Quiet Riot lead singer Kevin DuBrow died in 2007, the band seemed kaput, but drummer Frankie Banali revived it in 2010, going through a number of lead singers. In 2017, James Durbin, who had a strong showing on American Idol, took over on vocals. "Freak Flag" is the first single from his first album with the band, Road Rage.
  • When you let your freak flag fly, you're doing what feels right to you without concern for what others think. "Essentially what the song is about lyrically is people overcoming obstacles in their lives when they're being told that they're different or they can't do this, or they should do something else," Frankie Banali told Songfacts. "To really be themselves and forge forward."
  • James Durbin wrote the lyric for this song; Banali and his writing partner Neil Citron composed the music.
