Songfacts®:

  • This song references the easy-going life lived in the fictional town of Mayberry, North Carolina from The Andy Griffith Show, which was on the air from 1960 to 1968. Rascal Flatts lead singer Gary LeVox commented: "The banjo really stands out on this track. It tells a lot about life in 2002, how busy you can get being caught up in the rat race. It reminds me of my childhood and it's a really cool tune - one of our favorites."
  • No video was made for the song, but "Mayberry" still became one of Rascal Flatts' biggest hits. Released as the fourth single from their second album Melt, it was their second #1 on the Country chart, following the album's first single, "These Days." By the end of the '00s, the group had 10 Country chart toppers, all of which landed on the Hot 100 as well. In 2002 though, they were not yet a headline act; they were openers for Toby Keith.
  • The West Virginian songwriter Arlos Smith penned the song. It was the second Country #1 hit that he'd written, following "Home to You" by John Michael Montgomery in 2000. At this stage, most Rascal Flatts songs were written by outside writers.
  • Session pro Larry Beaird played the banjo on this track. He played acoustic guitar on another Rascal Flatts hit, "I'm Movin' On."
