Songfacts®:

  • British journalist Reginald "Reggie" Bosanquet was best known for being an anchor of News at Ten for ITN, particularly his partnership with Anna Ford in the late 1970s. His trademark slurred delivery led to suspicions that he was a heavy drinker and the rumors led to him being called such nicknames as Reginald Beaujolais and Reginald Boozalot.
  • In 1980, Bosanquet launched an attempt at pop stardom when he released this disco single, in which he narrated the lyrics in the style of a newscast. It was voted the worst record of all time by listeners of British DJ Kenny Everett.
  • Asked about the song after it was played on Kenny Everett's All Time Bottom 30 broadcast on April 12, 1980, Bosanquet replied it was prompted by film critic Barry Norman who wanted to know, "what it was like to make a pop record."

The outcome was this song, which was completed in one take as halfway between a serious recording and a joke "somewhere between Lee Marvin and Rex Harrison."
  • Fun Fact: Reggie Bosanquet was the only child of the England cricketer Bernard Bosanquet, who is credited with inventing the googly. (A type of delivery bowled by a right-arm leg spin bowler.)
