  • "Testify" finds Robin Thicke reflecting on a tough few years, including the breakdown of his marriage to Paula Patton, a poorly received album, the death of his actor father Alan at the end of 2016 and his fiancée April Love Geary's miscarriage.

It was the perfect day, and everything changed
And I lost my father suddenly
Couldn't keep it together, my family
And all my reckless ways caught up with me
Like the tortoise and the hare
    I was sleepin' when I shouldn't be

Thicke admits some of his trials and tribulations were brought on by poor lifestyle choices.
  • Thicke told Entertainment Tonight he is happy to be open regarding his thoughts concerning losing his father. "I want to honor him as much as I possibly can [by recalling] losing him and the new feelings that come about when you lose somebody that important in your life," the Los Angeles-born artist said.
  • By the end of the song Thicke is testifying to have come through all the hard times and is now in a better place.

Broken free from the chains that binded me
Like an angel with brand new wings
I can be anything I wanna be
    I can love myself again

Speaking to Beats 1's Zane Lowe, Thicke said, "The message in the song is really about the hope and the light at the end of that tunnel when you feel you're lost. That reconnection to something deeper than the surface is what really brings you back home."
