Songfacts®:

  • "Killing Fields" is Shinedown's snapshot of modern malaise all set to a pulsing beat. It doesn't tell you what to think; it just makes you feel things and leaves you to sort it out.
  • Some fans have interpreted "Killing Fields" as an allegory for addiction. The title possibly nods to the Cambodian Killing Fields, where over a million people were executed in a mass genocide. But in this version, there are no soldiers, no tyrants, just people lost to self-destruction.
  • Frontman Brent Smith offered this enigmatic explanation:

"'Killing Fields' is not a song that has one specific meaning. The subject matter in this song cannot be prioritized to one specific opinion. The audience is the BOSS, and they should have the freedom to interpret it the way they hear it, feel it, and experience it. What I will say is that the song is meant to push you, to inspire you to think for yourself, and ask questions... We all know we are living in complicated times... The true question is, how will you respond."
  • Brent Smith wrote the song with the band's longtime bassist/producer Eric Bass, alongside frequent collaborator Dave Bassett ("Second Chance," "Sound of Madness").
