Songfacts®:

  • On "Undressed" Sombr explores the emotional challenges of starting again after a breakup. It's essentially a musical sigh of exhaustion - the kind you let out when you realize that moving on after a deep connection isn't just about finding someone new but about mustering the energy to start from scratch.
  • You had a dream, you wanted better
You were sick of all the holes in your sweater
You looked to me and wondered whether
I was the lamppost to which you were tethered

The sweater, in this case, is a metaphor for a worn-out relationship, full of tiny frays and unraveling threads. This imagery calls back to "Sweater Weather" by The Neighbourhood, a song about longing and connection.

'Cause it's too cold for you here and now
Let me hold both your hands in the holes of my sweater

While "Sweater Weather" wraps its subject in warmth, Sombr's version flips the sentiment - the holes in the fabric aren't romantic; they're a sign of something falling apart.
  • On the production side, Sombr co-produced the track with Tony Berg, a veteran known for working with Phoebe Bridgers and Andrew Bird. Their collaboration started after Sombr's breakout 2022 single "Caroline" gained momentum, leading him to seek a producer who could help refine his evolving sound. Berg is 50 years older than Sombr, but the two connected over their shared passion for music, forming a working relationship that blends youthful innovation with seasoned expertise.
  • Sombr told Billboard that "Undressed" came together late one night while he was feeling low, what he calls the emotional sweet spot for writing his favorite songs. He started with drums, then laid down the groovy guitar bassline that runs through the track. The signature riff that opens the song and returns after the chorus came next. "It's not every day I listen back to a melody and still feel exactly what I felt when I made it," he said.

The rest of the song poured out quickly. He wrote and recorded the first verse, chorus, and second verse all that same night. The next day, he fleshed it out, knocked out the bridge in five minutes, and had about 75% of the track done - guitars, vocals, drums all in place.

    Then he leaked it.

To Sombr's surprise, the unfinished demo got the biggest reaction he'd ever had from a leak, and suddenly there was pressure to get it done fast. He brought the track to Sound City Studios in Van Nuys, California, where Tony Berg helped him tighten the transitions, beef up the drums, and add synth textures - especially in the bridge. "When we listened back," Sombr said, "I knew we had something special."
  • Sombr was stunned the first time he heard "Undressed" on his local radio station Z100, in an Uber of all places. At first, he thought the driver was playing it because he knew who Sombr was, but it turned out it was just on the radio.
