Songfacts®:

  • "Taking You Down" is the third track on Steve Hackett's 2024 concept album The Circus And The Nightwhale, which is loosely based on his life. The song describes a childhood friendship with someone who often wants the worst for him:

He'll fill your cup and watch you drink
Lead you to the brink and watch you sink

Hackett told Songfacts that it's about they dynamic between he and a friend when they were 9 years old. "It's really about young life, and that time that you go through when one minute someone is your best friend, and then the next minute they just want to finish you off," he said. "That sort of aspect of young life at school."
  • The vocalist on this song is Nad Sylvan, a Swedish singer Hackett has used on various projects and tours.
  • Hackett wrote this song with his wife, Jo Hackett, who has been writing songs with him since Steve's album Wolflight in 2015.
