Songfacts®:

  • Recorded while quarantined during the coronavirus pandemic, Surfaces shared this song of encouragement during a time of global turmoil.

All the broken people, put your hands up high
If you lift them up, you might just touch the sky
All the lonely people, put your hands up high
If you loosen up, you might just learn to fly
    Learn to fly

Surfaces are optimistic that if people open up their hearts to love, they will learn to fly again.
  • Sir Elton John joins Surfaces on the track. The British icon plays the piano and also croons the second verse, where he urges listeners to "keep that head up, don't you worry it will be alright."
  • Surfaces started writing "Learn To Fly" before COVID-19, but it became more pertinent as the pandemic wreaked havoc worldwide. After laying down the demo, they reached out to Sir Elton, who was already a fan of their previous single, "Sunday Best." He agreed to be a part of the track, and they were able to record together from quarantine using Zoom.
  • Surfaces held back the release of "Learn To Fly" for a couple of weeks until June 12, 2020. The duo explained they wanted to free up space on social media for the more pressing racial activism movement following the killing of George Floyd.
  • Colin Palecki of Surfaces told Billboard that they decided to release the song during the COVID-19 pandemic because its message of enjoying life amid brokenness is important. "It's inspiring people to grow from the pain they've had and learn that we can all open up," he explained. "Sometimes, we're too afraid - we get too comfortable or satisfied, and we're afraid to realize our full potential. Sometimes, you need that push; fall from that tree and find your wings."
  • Elton John included the song on his 2021 The Lockdown Sessions album. The record collects together a series of one-off recordings he did with different musicians.
