Songfacts®:

  • Unfortunately, this is not a novelty song, as the man who wrote it explained. It is the third track on the 1995 Superseeder album on which it runs to 5 minutes exactly, and appears to have been inspired by a particular incident.

On January 8, 1991, the 07.58 Sevenoaks to Cannon Street hit the buffer stops at the London terminus. There were around 1,000 passengers on the train, and 542 suffered some sort of injury although there were only two fatalities. A young man died almost immediately, and an older woman died three days later. The motorman, Maurice Graham, had cannabis in his blood, but the crash was put down to driver error.

Nick Salomon gives his guitar a psychedelic feel when playing this, for the obvious reason. >>>
