Songfacts®:

  • This song was inspired by "Eagle Bird," a track by Delta blues musician Jessie Mae Hemphill. She wrote the song in 1980, when preparing to leave for Europe, she observed a lamp with an eagle on it. According to Hemphill, she used the image to go "deep down playing it with all soul."

Dan Auerbach always liked the expression "eagle bird." He noted the way Hemphill wrote about the eagle symbolizing protection and strength, and penned a song comparing two lovers to the powerful bird.
