Songfacts®:

  • Written by the husband-and-wife songwriting team of Nickolas Ashford and Valerie Simpson, this song is a tale of a woman who finds it very difficult to make changes and readjustments in her life now that her boyfriend has left her.
  • This song was the Supremes' weakest chart peak since 1963. When this song failed to even make the Top 20, Motown president Berry Gordy sought help from a group of songwriters at Motown that he named "the Clan" (which included Gordy as well) and they became the writers of the Supremes' next hit "Love Child," which brought back to the #1 spot. >>
