Songfacts®:

  • Georgia native Tevin Thompson, aka TK Kravitz, first found a degree of success as one half of the Atlanta rap duo TK-N-Cash alongside CashOnly. The duo created a buzz with their singles "3 Times In A Row" and "Mind Right" and in addition Thompson earned songwriting credits on releases by Trey Songz, Flo Rida, Kevin Gates, Juicy J, among others. In 2016, the two rappers went their separate ways.

"Ocean" was released as the lead single from Thompson's second solo album 2.0 and it became his first song to reach the Hot 100.
  • The song finds Thompson going back and forth with his good pal, the Atlanta R&B and hip-hop singer-songwriter Jacquees. Thompson told Billboard:

"We've been friends for years. So 9 times out of 10 when we're in the studio, we end up making great music only because it's so genuine. It's like we're just hanging out. I already had the hook written and I was just stuck on it for two days. He pulled up to the studio one day and we had the Hennessy and vibes flowing. We got in the booth and went back and forth. By the grace of God 'Ocean' came out of that."
  • Kravitz explained in a Genius how he ended up paying subconscious tribute to Ginuwine's classic 2006 equestrian-themed number during the hook.

Come and hop on this pony

"Ginuwine of course had bangers, and at the time, I didn't even know why I said pony, it hit me in hindsight, like oh, I forgot Ginuwine. It just came to me. I don't know," he said. "I never said pony never in not one of my songs ever. I'm not going to lie to you, I kind of was like cringing when I said it because I didn't know how people was going to take it. But it was perfect."
