Songfacts®:

  • The last track on Genesis keyboard player Tony Banks' solo album Strictly Inc, "An Island in the Darkness" runs 17:21 and features vocals from Jack Hues, best known for his work with Wang Chung.

In our 2015 interview with Banks, he said that the track is more comparable to early Genesis than any other in his solo discography.
  • Banks told us that this song is about "ambition and achieving what you set out to do, and then about sustaining it, and how it goes for you after that, and how you cope with failure and all the rest of it."

He kept the lyric fairly ambiguous to encourage different interpretations.
