Songfacts®:

  • "Blind The Wind" is the unofficial title of a song better known as "The Most Mysterious Song on the Internet." Thousands of people invested countless hours delving into the song's origins, but until 2024, no one could figure out who wrote or recorded it. The song exists in an ironic state where its initial indistinctness had led directly to its postmortem notoriety.

What we know for certain is that Norddeutscher Rundfunk, a German radio station, broadcast the song in the early 1980s. It was part of a program titled Music for Young People (Musik für junge Leute). A person going by the pseudonym "Darius S." taped that broadcast, capturing "Blind The Wind" along with many other songs. He was a teenager living in the northern German town Wilhemshaven.

Darius held on to that tape as part of his collection for a long time. He never figured out who recorded "Blind The Wind," and the song might have died in a packing box if not for Darius' sister deciding to bring it to the internet in 2007. She has also chosen to remain anonymous (a fact that has caused some to doubt the legitimacy of the whole story), initially going by "Anton" before settling on "Lydia H."

Lydia's internet work set off a viral search that by 2019 reached as high as Rolling Stone magazine. Eventually, both the mainstream media and independent researchers from around the world got on the case.

After much sleuthing, the pop-culture detectives determined that the year Darius recorded the song was most likely 1984. Even this simple bit is uncertain, but the Technics tape deck he recorded the song on was built in 1984, so the recording couldn't be older than that. Many of the songs surrounding it on Darius' mix tape also date to '84.

For a time, it was even believed that a man named Paul Baskerville had been correctly identified as the DJ who played the original broadcast. Baskerville himself went along with this notion, though he could never remember playing the song. He did recall, however, playing songs he received on mixed tapes sent to him over the Berlin Wall (a wall dividing the free West Germany from Communist East Germany from 1961 to 1989).

Research by Reddit user u/FlexxonMobil, published July 10, 2020, cast doubt on Baskerville being the DJ, so, even that little bit of discovery was discredited, leaving us still in the fog of mystery.

On November 4, 2024, Redditor marijn1412 cracked the case. The song is called "Subways Of Your Mind" by a German band called FEX. Marijn1412 found an old newspaper article about FEX, which won a talent show in 1984. He contacted a member of the band, Michael Hädrich, who sent him some old material on cassette tape, and on it was the mystery song. Marijn1412 waited to post his findings until the band member could get FEX back together and register the song.
  • "Blind the Wind" is a pretty good song, but it's not exceptional or anything to really set itself apart from other '80s New Wave songs. The very fact that it snuck by without much fanfare in 1984 has led to it becoming an international viral hit in the 2000s. The mystery of the song's origins is most interesting than the song itself (no offense to whoever recorded the tune).
  • The song is sometimes called by other titles derived from its lyrics, including "Like The Wind," "Ride The Wind," "Like No End," or simply "TMS (The Mysterious Song)."

By a band called LOSTWAVE. they sounded German or Soviet.
  • Randal Turner from Washington State UsaThe song was part of a contest, get up and sing but you had to ad lid the lyrics = make up the song lyrics as you sing to the music. Here are the lyrics and what the song was about: LIKE THE WIND
    YOU CAME RUNNIN
    TAKE THE CONSEQUENCE OF LIVING
    THERE’S NO SPACE
    THERE’S NO TOMORROW
    THERE’S NO SENT COMMUNICATIONS
    CHECKIN IN’ CHECKIN OUT
BUT THE SUN GOES DOWN OUTSIDE
HAVE IT ALL ANYWAYS IN THE SUBWAYS OF YOUR MIND
    LOCKED AWAY
    YOU’RE GONNA SUFFER
LET A SMILE BE YOUR COMPANION
    THERE’S NO PLACE
    TO LET US ALL GO
HEAR THE YOUNG AND RESTLESS BREATHING
CHECHIN IN’ CHECKIN OUT BUT THE SUN WILL NEVER SHINE
HAVE IT ALL ANYWAY IN THE SUBWAYS OF YOUR MIND
    [INSTRUMENTAL]
CHECHIN IN’ CHECKIN OUT BUT THE SUN WILL NEVER SHINE
HAVE IT ALL ANYWAY IN THE SUBWAYS OF YOUR MIND
CHECKIN IN CHECKIN OUT WITH THE SUMMER BLUES
TEARIN IN’ TEARIN OUT IT’S THE REAL YOU
CHECKIN IN CHECKIN OUT WITH THE SUMMER BLUES
TEARIN IN’ TEARIN OUT IT’S THE REAL YOU
CHECKIN IN CHECKIN OUT WITH THE SUMMER BLUES
TEARIN IN’ TEARIN OUT IT’S THE REAL YOU
CHECKIN IN CHECKIN OUT WITH THE SUMMER BLUES
TEARIN IN’ TEARIN OUT IT’S THE REAL YOU
I sang about my situation at the time which explains the lyrics.
I was framed for a crime by the CIA who turned me into a MKUltra. They used me and other teenage MKUltra's who committed crimes or were framed for crimes. As punishment instead of placing us in a juvenile prison they would send us out at night to commit planned robberies of high end items that were heavily insured. The owners agreed to split the insurance money with the CIA. These were high end items from wealthy homes to Museums and jewelry stores. I wasn't suppose to have any communications with people outside of the center we were held in and was not suppose to leave without a handler with me. I broke the rules that night and the song lyrics are about me running to go sing music knowing there would be consequences. The lyrics explain my situation at the time.
The song was never released or used to try and get a contract. I was unable to take the win due to my situation so the win was given to the other person who sang. If he wants to back up my story of being the singer of this song please do. This song is known as the Most Mysterious song on the internet. I do recall the end of the song using checkin in checkin out with the sun or the moon people wouldn't understand that without the back story so I left it as is. Being used at night by the CIA to carry out missions that filled the pockets of deep state then sleeping during the day, checking in and out with the sun or the moon etc.
