  • Yeah

    Desert sky
    Dream beneath a desert sky
The rivers run but soon run dry
    We need new dreams tonight

    Desert rose
Dreamed I saw a desert rose
Dress torn in ribbons and in bows
Like a siren she calls to me

    Sleep comes like a drug
    In God's country
    Sad eyes, crooked crosses
    In God's country

    Set me alight
We'll punch a hole right through the night
    Everyday the dreamers die
See what's on the other side

    She is liberty
And she comes to rescue me
    Hope, faith, her vanity
    The greatest gift is gold

    Sleep comes like a drug
    In God's country
    Sad eyes, crooked crosses
    In God's country

    Naked flame
She stands with a naked flame
I stand with the sons of Cain
Burned by the fire of love
Burned by the fire of love Writer/s: Adam Clayton, Dave Evans, Larry Mullen, Paul Hewson

  • John from Tucson, AzIn response to your question Heather, Joshua Tree's name was intended to be called The Two Americas, but the band changed the name to what it is now because Bono and Edge thought the Joshua Tree was a good metaphor for America, at least that's what I've been told at any rate. This is my favorite song on the album though. Edge's guitar work is at its finest here. Hope they'll play it when I seem em next month!
  • AnonymousThe title "Joshua Tree" Came from a visit they did while here in California. I used to go to Joshua Tree on weekend camping trips. It is concidered one of many "Spiritual" places in the US. I for one go there when in need of mental cleansing when over beared by daily stress. As such The Band Was So inspired by the area and the native americans still living in the area they named the lbum after the area. Most of the songs were written well before hand.
  • Wavy from Tucson , AzEvery 4th of July I plop in the Joshua Tree. (thats the day I bought it--way back in 1989) and man--and this song always stands out. Sad eyes, crooked crosses....Enough to make a grown man get teary eyed and all that. The song seems like an afterthought--a b-side--just check the way it ends. But I love it just the same.
  • Heather from Los Angeles, CaHow come the album was called, "The Joshua Tree?" I live in the SoCal desert and so have seen many a true Joshua Tree. Would like to know the answer.
  • Jay from Atlanta, GaWhen you are in God's perfect will, doing what you know is right in the eyes of God you can sleep soundly at night. "Sleep comes like a drug in God's country".
  • Rick from Humboldt, Iai love the joshua tree
