Songfacts®:

  • Jordan Beckett, who records as Bootstraps, finds himself in a melancholy mood in this song, where he's rather sink into his misery than fight it.

Beckett had the title "I'd Rather Be Blue," but the song came together when he found himself in an Uber on the way to a birthday party in Hollywood he really didn't want to attend. "I started thinking about how I'd rather be home, stewing in my bummer mood that I was in," he said in his Songfacts interview.
  • Beckett sings:

I'd rather be blue and stay in
    And close the curtains
    Stare at the ceiling
    Listen to sirens

This section came after a friend tried to goad him out of his blues by encouraging him to get out and do something. Beckett wasn't having it: mixing and mingling wasn't his thing.
  • Why was Beckett so bummed out? He told Songfacts: "I'd gone through a breakup and I felt like a lot of things were just lurching forward. I couldn't put my finger on what was wrong, but when it happened, there were other people in my life that were causing me to feel like, what is the point of going out and doing these things. Like I'm not that fun to be around."
