Songfacts®:

  • A slow, heartfelt ballad with an openly religious theme of personal conviction, "Hero" was written by Josh Miller. The Nashville songwriter's other credits include Bebe Rexha and Florida Georgia Line's "Meant to Be" plus Chris Lane's own duet with Tori Kelly, "Take Back Home Girl."
  • The song's three verses show different people looking for a "hero" to save them from their situations. It starts with a lonely woman seeking a man's attention and continues with a boy needing someone to fill the gap caused by his absent father. The track ends with the ultimate hero: Jesus Christ.

If you wanna feel something real
That this mean old world can't kill
    Not even Satan
There's a savior, he'll wash away your sins
Open up your heart, accept him and
    He'll save your soul
    Jesus is a hero
    And everybody needs a hero

"'Hero' is a very special song to me," Chris Lane said. "I've never had a song quite like this one. It's one of those story songs you always look for, and the third verse really hits home for me. It's who I am, it's how I grew up."
